A Global Hub Built In Singapore

HSBC said the Centre of Excellence is designed to function as a scalable innovation hub, developing AI capabilities in Singapore that can later be deployed across the bank’s international network. The announcement forms part of HSBC’s broader technology strategy to embed AI more deeply into its operations, with the stated aim of improving customer experiences while strengthening internal decision-making through advanced analytics. Group CEO Georges Elhedery said the centre is meant to help the bank deliver personalised customer experiences safely and at scale, while keeping human judgement and accountability central to how the technology is used.

Three Priority Areas

The centre will begin with three areas of focus. In wealth management, HSBC intends to use AI to improve customer conversations tied to the wealth journey. In treasury, the bank is introducing agentic AI solutions, systems capable of carrying out multi-step tasks with limited human intervention, aimed at supporting corporate liquidity and decision-making. In payments, HSBC plans to develop AI-enabled digital payment capabilities, with potential applications in fraud detection, real-time transaction processing, and intelligent payment routing.

Hiring And Talent Development

To staff the centre, HSBC plans to recruit more than 100 AI specialists who will work alongside Chief AI Officer David Rice and existing teams across wealth management and global payments. The bank said the centre will also serve as a pipeline for talent in natural language processing, data science, AI governance, and human-centred design, and that it intends to work with educational institutions and government bodies in Singapore to help build that pipeline.
