The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech) anticipates a significant increase in the number of farmer-entrepreneurs in Misamis Oriental, driven by support for upgraded agricultural technology.

During a recent visit to the Rice Processing System (RPS) II in Balingasag town, PHilMech Director Joel Dator emphasized the importance of farmers expanding their focus beyond mere production to actively engage in the business aspects of agriculture.

“This state-of-the-art facility was specifically established to enhance the quality of farmers’ harvests and significantly increase their market value,” Dator said in an interview.

The RPS II, capable of processing two to three tons of rice per hour, was officially inaugurated last week during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s visit to the province. It is projected to substantially improve the milling recovery rate, minimize post-harvest losses, and empower farmers to sell premium-grade rice at more competitive prices.

Dator encouraged farmers to form cooperatives or associations to more effectively identify and collectively address their specific needs. He assured them of PHilMech’s continued support through the second phase of the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Mechanization Program.

The realization of the RPS II project was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the First Integrated Community Cooperative (FICCO).
